This 1978 live recording of a radio broadcast reveals the young, brash Patti at her New Jersey Bad Girl best, evidently striving to live up to the impression listeners might have derived from her early albums and public appearances (who can forget the surreal TV interview with Barbara Walters?). She playfully taunts annoying audience members, delivers erratic stage chatter that is hilariously overburdened with the linguisitic filler "like," and is totally revved for one of the best live performances that I have come across. Best of all, Smith provides some dynamite performances of many of her early songs (some quite unexpected - who would have guessed that "We Three" would make it to live performance?). Smith likewise reveals a disarming sense of humor, most evident in a hilarious version of the saccharine Top 40 hit "You Light up My Life," which by itself would justify purchasing this recording. This CD deserves a much higher profile than it seems to have. The sound engineering is surprisingly good for a live performance of this vintage, further adding to the appeal of the recording, which is an absolute must for Smith fans.
